Mike Oettinger started his martial arts journey in November 2004 at the age of 18 training in boxing, No Gi Submission Grappling and Kickboxing. By 2006 he amassed a 3-0 amateur MMA record and was in line to fight for a USKBA Amateur title at Cruiserweight but a failed medical screening would lead to a cancelled fight and put Mike’s MMA aspirations on-hold indefinitely. In 2006 Mike decided to get serious with Jiu Jitsu, leaving his MMA team and joining OCBJJ under the tutelage of Tom DeBlass.
In 2009 after graduating from Stockton University, a job opportunity prompted Mike’s relocation back to his hometown of Hazlet, NJ and a transfer to Renzo Gracie Academy. Mike began teaching kids classes with his long-time friend and teammate Joe Dockery at RGAMMA(?) in 2011 eventually instructing adult classes and the progressing from Blue to Brown Belt in BJJ at the end of 2016.
In 2017, Mike became the MMA Coach for The Institute Muay Thai owned by his good friend fellow coach Michael Burke. Mike instructs MMA/Jiu Jitsu classes for all levels at the school. In addition, he trains, corners and prepares pro and amateur fighters for MMA and BJJ competition.
In 2018 Mike became the Head Coach and Instructor for the Rutgers University Martial Arts club. He Instructed Rutgers students and alumni in Wrestling, No-Gi BJJ, and Striking.
December of 2019 Mike joined Bayshore BJJ as a Student, Jiu Jitsu Coach, and Muay Thai Coach. Instructing all ages and levels in both Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai.
Mike couldn’t have kept up during his 16 years of Martial Arts without a strong support system of family and friends. Most importantly his kids: Jaiden, Addy, and Lily and his girlfriend Kristen. All of whom train with him at Bayshore BJJ.
