Over the past weekend our coaches took a small group of competitors to Atlantic City compete at the ADCC New Jersey Open.
Leading up to this competition we put an emphasis on techniques and strategies that play into the specific rule set; brushing up on our back attacks and leg locks. We couldn’t have been more proud of our students for how they were able to implement those techniques and strategies on the mat when it counted.
John Regina had an amazing performance over the weekend taking away the 3rd place bronze medal! John won his first match Via closed guard kimura and then went on to secure a beautiful inside heel hook! Extra brownie points to John for using the sequence that coach Ben has been going over in our Wednesday Leg lock class for the last few weeks!
Melissa Robinson looks incredible winning gold in her division with 2 beautiful Rear naked strangles. Mel has been putting in tons of work in the training room working on her sequences and it showed!
Our 2023 Competitor of the Year, Outcast Mentality sponsored athlete RJ Jimenez did what he does best, winning gold in his bracket with a total mat time of under a minute. He submitted his first opponent in approximately 40 seconds via Aoki lock, and set up an inside heel hook off an Iminari roll on his second opponent in just under 20 seconds. RJ’s been putting in the work and it shows!
We couldn’t be more proud of everyone that competed!!!
Competition is just one of the many facets of jiu-jitsu, and most of our students will never choose to participate in competition. If it is something that appeals to you make sure to talk to an instructor so they can get you properly prepared! Preparing for competition is a complex process, and it is important to have someone with top level experience to guide you through the process.
